Ancient clay tablets reveal life of Jews in Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon

A new exhibition of ancient clay tablets discovered in modern-day Iraq is shedding light for the first time on the daily life of Jews exiled to Babylon some 2,500 years ago.

The exhibition is based on more than 100 cuneiform tablets, each no bigger than an adult's palm, that detail transactions and contracts between Judeans driven from, or convinced to move from, Jerusalem by King Nebuchadnezzar around 600 BC.

Archaeologists got their first chance to see the tablets -- acquired by a wealthy London-based Israeli collector -- barely two years ago. They were blown away.

"It was like hitting the jackpot," said Filip Vukosavovic, an expert in ancient Babylonia, Sumeria and Assyria who curated the exhibition at Jerusalem's Bible Lands Museum.

"We started reading the tablets and within minutes we were absolutely stunned. It fills in a critical gap in understanding of what was going on in the life of Judeans in Babylonia more than 2,500 years ago."

Islamic State abducts at least 150 Christians in Syria

Pray to the Lord For Our Brothers & Sisters

The Islamic State terror group has kidnapped at least 150 Assyrian Christians in Syria, according to activists on the ground in the war-torn country.

Among those taken were women, children and the elderly. The kidnapping has prompted hundreds of terrified families to flee their homes, activists said Wednesday.

“We have verified at least 150 people who have been abducted from sources on the ground,” Bassam Ishak, president of the Syriac National Council of Syria, told Reuters.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier said that 90 Christians were kidnapped during the dawn raids on a series of villages near Hasakeh, a city under Kurdish control. The villages sit along the Khabur River in Hasakeh province, which borders Turkey and Iraq.

Nearly 1,000 families have fled their villages in the northeastern province of Hasakeh since Monday’s kidnappings, said Osama Edward, director of the Sweden-based Assyrian Human Rights Network.

About 800 of them have taken refuge in the city of Hasakeh and 150 in Qamishli, a Kurdish city on the Turkish border, Edward said, adding that the number of displaced people came to about 5,000.

Most of the hostages were women, children or elderly.

Divers Find Sunken Treasure Off Israel's Coast

A group of recreational divers this month discovered the largest cache of gold coins ever found in Israel while diving in the ancient sunken harbor of Caesarea.

The group of divers immediately notified the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), which sent an underwater team to recover the treasure.

With its nearly 2,000 gold coins dating back to the 11th century, when the land was ruled by the Fatimid dynasty based in Cairo. Experts believe the coins either belonged to a large merchant ship or were collected taxes en route to the capital in Cairo when the transport ship sunk.

Israel Becomes a Winter Wonderland

A massive winter storm that descended from Europe slammed into Israel overnight Thursday, with heavy winds, rain and thunder. By the morning, all but the lowest parts of the country were covered in snow.

The Golan and the Galilee regions experienced heavy snowfall, in Jerusalem over 12 inches had accumulated, and even the desert capital of Beersheva reported some snow on the ground.

Jerusalem Mayor Barkat Subdues Terrorist

Terrorist stabbing attacks are sadly becoming common enough that most are no longer surprised by news of the latest incident. But Sunday’s terrorist stabbing on the streets of Jerusalem did catch widespread attention because it was brought to a halt by none other than Mayor Nir Barkat.

The attack took place at IDF Square where the Jerusalem Municipality meets the corner of the Old City. A young Palestinian man, like many “lone wolf” terrorists before him, approached an Orthodox Jewish man waiting at a crosswalk and stabbed his victim from behind.

The Jewish man jumped and swung his bag to keep the terrorist at bay as he retreated across the street. The terrorist began to slowly cross street, still threatening his wounded prey and other passersby.

It was at this point that traffic cameras (see below) recorded Barkat and his bodyguards bravely march into the intersection and confront the terrorist. Barkat demanded that the terrorist drop his knife. As soon as the weapon hit the ground, Barkat pounced, quickly subduing the attacker with the help of one of his bodyguards.

Barkat was then seen crossing the street to assist and comfort the victim, later identified as 27-year-old Avraham Goldschmidt, a local father of four. On Sunday evening, Barkat visited Goldschmidt at Jerusalem’s Sha’are Zedek Hospital, where the victim was listed in stable condition.

Goldschmidt recalled frantically calling out for help, and his surprise when that call was selflessly answered by Jerusalem’s mayor, who had seen the attack unfold while waiting in his vehicle at the intersection.

Brazil's Historic Drought Is Showing No Signs Of Abating

We've allready reported about God's Judgement on Brazil (and other nations) for turning against Israel, by recognising a 'palestinian' state.

SUPPORTING a PALESTINIAN STATE in Israel brings a CURSE on your nation

Brazil’s worst drought since the 1930s doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Halfway through its rainy season, reservoirs remain critically low, blackouts have been plaguing cities and officials are urging residents to cut back on consumption. Drastic water rationing may be coming soon to three of Brazil’s most populous states, which could amplify frustration that has already been simmering against local and state authorities.

São Paulo, home to around 20 million Brazilians, has been the focal point of the prolonged water crisis, and has been feeling the effects for months: 2014’s rainfall levels were the lowest on record there, and the Cantareira reservoir system -- the largest of São Paulo’s six reservoirs -- is only at around 5.1 percent of its capacity, according to water utility company Sabesp. This week, São Paulo officials said some areas could face severe water rationing if rainfalls don’t return to normal, suggesting that the 6 million people served by the Cantareira water system might be getting as few as two days of water service a week.

That’s a stark about-face for the state government, which had in recent months downplayed the chance that water rationing would be necessary. But rationing has already become a part of daily life for São Paulo residents, who have been seeing reduced water availability during overnight hours.

As the situation grows more desperate, other states are scrambling for ways to cut back on water usage. According to Brazil’s Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, 93 cities have already instituted rationing. The main reservoir in Rio de Janeiro state is operating at zero capacity, according to the federal water agency, although officials have noted plans to divert water from other sources to prevent rationing until at least July. In Minas Gerais, the home state of President Dilma Rousseff and a prime coffee-producing region, officials have asked companies and residents to cut back water usage by as much as 30 percent.

The drought has already taken its toll on agriculture: Soybean crops have already seen “irreversible yield damage,” according to Hamburg-based analysis group Oil World, and forecasts for this year’s coffee harvest are considerably lower than last year. Drought conditions have also hit the tourism sector, with several municipalities canceling Carnival celebration plans for mid-February.

Brazilians have also faced rolling blackouts in recent weeks as hydropower resources dwindle, heightening fears about impending energy rationing on top of the water shortage. Hydroelectric dams provide some two-thirds of the country’s energy. For some residents, the lack of water and light in the midst of boiling summer temperatures has pushed them to the brink: Scattered protests have broken out in some municipalities, including São Paulo, in recent months.

Analysts have highlighted climate change, Brazil’s population surge and deforestation all as factors that have contributed to the current crisis. But Brazilians have been pointing fingers at local and state officials for poor planning and failing to upgrade municipal pipe systems. A government reported released this month said that 37 percent of treated water was wasted due to pipe failure before it even reached residents’ taps, based on data from 2013.

Meanwhile, the drought is also tapping another source of simmering resentment: the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. A small contingent of protesters has lashed out against a newly constructed golf course in Rio for what they say is a waste of taxpayer funds and precious water resources. Bloomberg News noted one sign at the Occupy Golf protests last weekend that read: “There’s water for golf, but not the population.”

Tomb of Ezra The Scribe Turned into a Mosque

A recent Facebook video from the shrine of Ezra the Scribe, some 400 kilometres south of Baghdad, has confirmed what many have suspected for some years: this tomb, that Jews have revered since Biblical times, has now been transformed into a mosque.

During the period of the Second Temple (516 BCE - 70 CE) Ezra the Scribe led the Jewish exiles back to Jerusalem from Persia. He is either thought to have died in Jerusalem or in Uzair, near Basra.

Ezra's tomb was in Jewish hands until the mass exodus of 1950 - 51. Now, however, Koranic inscriptions and hadith hang on the walls and much green paint has been used to decorate the building.

But the video does show that Hebrew inscriptions still survive, namely psalms inscribed on marble or wooden plaques. These are typical of Jewish holy places in Iraq. They are shaped like lamps - the menorot of the Temple - and bear the ineffable four-letter name of God.

Peer through a window into the sarcophagus and you will see an inscription in Hebrew identifying it as the final resting place of Ezra the Scribe.

Infant terror victim Adelle Biton passes away

Infant terror victim Adelle Biton struggled for her life for nearly two years after suffering critical neurological damage from an Arab rock attack, a struggle that ended on Tuesday when she passed away. Now a new unexpected struggle has begun - to have her buried in her hometown.

After Adelle passed suddenly following a rapid deterioration in her situation this week due to a bout with pneumonia, Biton's family decided on Tuesday evening that they wanted to bury the four-year-old in the town of Yakir in Samaria where they live.

The bereaved parents Adva and Rafi contacted Deputy Samaria Regional Council Head Yossi Dagan, as well as the rabbi of Yakir, Rabbi Aharon Kohen, asking that land be prepared for use as a cemetery within the municipal borders of the town.

The Council located 20 dunams of suitable land within the municipal borders of the town, and contacted the IDF Civil Administration that is responsible for administering Judea and Samaria due to the fact that the region has yet to be annexed.

However, the Civil Administration refused the request, citing the lack of a master plan for a cemetery in the 20 dunam area.

Given the need to bury Adelle quickly, Dagan urgently contacted Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's office and spoke with Cabinet Secretary Avichai Mandelblit, demanding that the office get involved on the matter.

"It cannot be that a girl who turned into a terror victim will not be able to be buried in the town she lived in just because of a bureaucratic matter," said Dagan. "We demand from the prime minister in the name of the Biton family that he get involved immediately so that we can bring this holy girl to true burial as soon as possible."

Adelle was critically wounded in March 2013, when the family car was attacked with rocks outside of Ariel in Samaria by Arab terrorists, causing the car to crash. The fist-sized rock struck Adelle directly in the head, leaving the two-year-old baby critically wounded; doctors said her recovery from the blow was nothing short of miraculous. Adelle had been in and out of the hospital since then in a grueling rehabilitation period.

Samaria Regional Council Head Gershon Mesika, who together with Dagan was with the Biton family to support them in the hours before Adelle passed, strongly condemned the refusal to bury the infant terror victim.

"Adelle was murdered only because she was a Jew. It is unthinkable that because of bureaucratic problems the holy Adelle will not be buried in a cemetery in Yakir," said Mesika.

The regional head added "I call on the prime minister to order the Administration not to act with bureaucratic inflexibility, and to allow the burial of Adelle in Yakir in the place she so loved."

Hundreds of Jewish graves desecrated, broken, toppled in France

Muslims are hunting down and killing Jews in cold blood in Europe, and the AP and Yahoo News calls this desecration of hundreds of Jewish graves as “vandalism”: “The vandalism comes at a time of growing insecurity among French Jews and amid general religious tensions in Europe.”

Religious tensions? Are these vicious cowards for real? Muslims are waging war — real war in the streets — and this is the reportage we get from the enemedia.

Hundreds of graves vandalized in Jewish cemetery in northeastern France, By JTA, February 15, 2015.

Gravestones were toppled and broken in the Jewish cemetery in Sarre-Union, located in the Bas-Rhin region in Alsace, the French Jewish news website JSSnews reported Sunday.

No bodies were dug up in the cemetery, which is still in use, according to JSSnews. The vandalism was the work of more than one person, Philippe Richert, president of the Regional Council of Alsace, told the news website.

“The cemetery contains 400 graves and about half were desecrated,” Sarre-Union Mayor Marc Senna, told JSSnews.

“The country will not tolerate this new injury which goes against the values that all French people share,” French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told the French news agency AFP. “Every effort will be made to identify, question and bring to justice the person or persons responsible for this ignominious act.”

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, in a tweet, called the vandalism “a vile, anti-Semitic act, an insult to the memory” of the dead. He vowed to find those responsible.

The Jewish cemetery in Sarre-Union has been attacked in the past. In 1988, 60 Jewish headstones were overturned, and in 2001, 54 graves were vandalized.

Why Israel matters to America (and to the World)

By Mike Huckabee

I’m not a Jew. I didn’t even play one on TV. But you’ll be hard pressed to find a more full-throated defender and supporter of the Jewish state than me. My love for Israel is not a recently acquired taste, due to politics. It happened 42 years ago, when I first visited there as a 17-year-old. In my dozens of subsequent visits, including three last year, I’ve seen the dry bones come to life and the desert bloom — even as this tiny, New Jersey-sized piece of real estate remains the most contested land on earth.

When I first visited in 1973, Israel was a proud, but struggling, 25 year-old nation. Many of its people lived in kibbutzim out of necessity. To support their economy, they largely grew oranges, cultivated vegetables, and hosted tourists who came to walk in in the footsteps of Jesus and the prophets. It’s fair to say that Israel has not spent the last 40 years simply wandering around the desert.

Modern Israel has given us the mobile phone, the drip irrigation system, the USB thumb drive, many of the most effective cancer killing drugs in use, voice mail, video on demand, and cherry tomatoes. But Israel’s real contribution to America has nothing to do with life-saving or life-improving products.

America’s relationship with Israel is not merely organizational, it’s organic. Israel is a mirror image of America in its commitment to religious liberty, education, women’s rights, free speech, democratic governance and free-market capitalism. Women have equal access to education and workplace opportunities. While a Jewish state, Israel also protects all religious shrines and provides Christians, Muslims and Jews universal access to all religious sites. (How many churches or synagogues are equally protected by the Syrians or the Iranians?)

Their military also takes extraordinary measures to prevent civilian casualties. I spent a day with Israeli pilots at their southernmost air base and witnessed the elaborate steps they take to protect noncombatants — even those used as human shields to protect terrorists. No nation, not even the United States, takes greater care to protect civilians. In addition, while other nations arbitrarily enforce the law or remedy political problems with military coups, the Israeli judicial system holds those guilty of crime and corruption accountable with jury trials and prison terms. They accept and embrace responsibility. Less advanced nations either allow it, or deal with it by staging a military coup d’etat. While we may offer them arms and military hardware, Israel has never asked us to provide American personnel to fight their battles.

But something even more significant binds us together. We are equally targeted for annihilation by Islamic jihadists. The forces that toppled the Twin Towers; flew an airplane into the Pentagon; behead Christian children, journalists and relief workers; rape and enslave young girls; and burn alive a captured pilot — have vowed to kill every Jew and every American. Iran’s maniacal leader once declared that he would “wipe Israel off the map.”

Children in Islamic countries are raised to believe that strapping a bomb to their bodies to kill Jews is a holy mission that brings rewards in the afterlife. And the world asks Israel to give up the land God gave them so their sworn enemies can get closer to their children’s schools, playgrounds, and bedrooms?

President Obama has spent more time berating Israel for building bedrooms for its families than he has spent bothering Iran for building nuclear bombs. This administration has shown enormous contempt for Israel’s prime minister. They have responded petulantly because Benjamin Netanyahu accepted an invitation to speak to Congress and will provide a more honest assessment of the Iranian nuclear threat than those in our own government. Netanyahu is a Churchill in a world of Chamberlains.

Israel matters to America, because friends always matter. And Israel is a friend. While I’m here for the umpteenth time in 42 years, I will tell them, “You’ve got a friend.” And I won’t even need to take James Taylor to sing it. I’ll really mean it.

Netanyahu Warns US, World Powers Israel Will Block Iran Nuclear Threat

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had some grim words of warning Sunday in his statement at the start of the weekly cabinet session.

Netanyahu noted that major world powers and Iran are “galloping towards an agreement that will enable Iran to arm itself with nuclear weapons” and will endanger the security of the State of Israel.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif held private talks over the weekend, Netanyahu said, after which they announced they intend to complete a framework agreement by the end of March.

Israel’s response, he said, will be to stop what he called a “bad and dangerous agreement.”

The prime minister underscored that Israel will “do everything and will take any action to foil this agreement that will place a heavy cloud over the future of the State of Israel and its security.”

It is precisely for this reason the Democratic party and U.S. President Barack Obama have worked to derail the prime minister’s scheduled address to a joint session of the Congress set for March 3. The speech falls at the end of the same week Netanyahu is slated to appear at the annual AIPAC (American Israeli Political Action Committee) conference in Washington DC, and just two weeks prior to Israel’s national elections on March 17.

The deadline for talks between world powers and Tehran over a rollback on Iran’s nuclear technology activities is March 31. The Obama administration is deeply committed to seeing some signed agreement emerge from those talks, apparently regardless of its cost to the Jewish State.

Iran has repeatedly vowed to wipe Israel off the world map. Any agreement that allows Iran to continue to enrich uranium – thereby enabling it to achieve an atomic weapon – presents an existential risk to Israel.

Netanyahu: I Must Address Congress to Ensure Israel's Survival

Netanyahu Completes Torah Scroll for Jewish Paris Victims

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu took part early Thursday afternoon in a Torah scroll completion ceremony, inking the final letters in a Torah scroll dedicated to the memory of four Jewish men murdered in last month's terrorist attack at the Hyper Cacher market in Paris – Yohan Cohen, Yoav Hattab, Philippe Braham and François-Michel Saada.

This was the first of four Torah scrolls being prepared in memory of the four victims, two of which will be completed in synagogues in Paris and two at the Western Wall.

After inscribing the letters, Prime Minister Netanyahu said:

"I express the feelings of the Jewish People regarding these victims, who are part of our people and who were murdered just because they were Jews, in terrible anti-Semitism that is sweeping across Europe. Many European governments are still not ready to point to the source of the new anti-Semitism – extremist Islam.

"To my regret, we saw an expression of this spirit yesterday at the UN, when they refused to condemn Hezbollah, which claimed responsibility for the murderous attack against our forces [last week].

“On the one hand, in Europe they refuse to call the child by its name, or at least they are not ready to grab the bull by the horns and say that the source of the new anti-Semitism and the murderous attacks that are running rampant around the world, this terrible brutality against Jews and against non-Jews, is extremist Islam.

“I share not only in the grief of the families, but in the feelings of the entire Jewish People who understand that the attack in Paris was an attack on all Jews wherever they are. If these murderers had the ability, they would kill all Jews wherever they are.

"By the way, they say this very clearly; therefore, there is no alternative to Jews defending themselves – first and foremost in the state of the Jews. Governments that line up against this anti-Semitism will discover its source."

'Anti-Zionism is Anti-Semitism,' Rules German Judge

A German judge last week equated condemnation of Zionism with anti-Semitism, undercutting the arguments of many who claim that hostile criticism of Israel is not the same as hating the Jews.

In judging the case of 24-year-old Taylan Can, a German citizen of Turkish decent known for is anti-Israel activism, Judge Gauri Sastry refused to allow the defendant to hide behind the notion of legitimate criticism of the Jewish state.

Can was ultimately convicted for incitement against an ethnic minority for his role in a July 18, 2014 demonstration in Essen, Germany, where he and others used the term “Zionist” to stir up anger against Israel and local Jewish residents.

At his hearing, Can insisted he was not an anti-Semite, and was merely opposed to the policies of the State of Israel. But Judge Sastry was having none of it. Die Welt quoted her as clarifying that “‘Zionist’ is the language of anti-Semites, the code for ‘Jew.’”

It was likely that particular portion of Judge Sastry’s ruling would be overturned when Can appealed to higher courts, but European Jewish groups nevertheless praised the unprecedented and bold decision that had publicly unmasked one of the more dangerous lies of our times.

French soldiers attacked outside Jewish community center

A man with a knife hidden in his bag attacked three soldiers on an anti-terror patrol in front of a Jewish community center in southern France on Tuesday, two police officials said.

Sarah Baron, a police union official in the city of Nice, said the man was detained after the attack near the Galeries Lafayette department store. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said the attacker had an identity card with the name Moussa Coulibaly.

The surname, which is relatively common for families of Malian descent, is the same as that of the man who seized hostages in a kosher supermarket in Paris and gunned down a policewoman last month.

Another police official said the attacker pulled a knife at least 20 centimeters (8 inches) long out of a bag and set upon one of the soldiers, injuring him in the chin. He then swiped two other soldiers — one in the cheek, the other in the forearm — before being apprehended by riot police stationed near the building, which houses the city’s Jewish community center.

A manager at the center, who did not want to be identified because she was afraid, confirmed soldiers posted in front of the building were attacked. She said it happened around lunchtime and no one was inside the office.

The attacker, aged about 30, had a record of theft and violence, the official said on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. His motive was not yet clear, the official added.

A French security official said the attacker had been sent home by Turkish authorities last week after flying in on a one-way ticket.

Turkey is a transit point for jihadis from Europe to join up with Islamic extremist groups fighting in Syria and Iraq.

Sadistic Death Pornography Coming to a Theater Near You

By Prof. Phyllis Chesler

This is a year of sadistic death pornography. For the last eight months, the death artists of ISIS have been enslaving, beheading, tossing gay men out of buildings, and burning Muslims and infidels alive. These gruesome deeds are faithfully, lovingly, preserved via video and released to the world. ISIS must be stopped now.

The West, and civilized people everywhere, seem unprepared, even shocked, by all this. But why?

The entire 21st century has been characterized by an alarming and exponential rise in anti-Semitism, the beheading of Western journalists; planes being flown into buildings, ships and trains being blown up, Embassies being torched, hotels being taken hostage, children being kidnapped into slavery or used as human shields; by genocides, massacres, grisly crucifixions, human homicide bombs—and all the perpetrators have been Muslims who insisted that they were engaged in holy Jihad against an infidel world (or the wrong kind of “other” Muslim) whose values are anti-Islamic.

King Abdullah of Jordan, like President Obama, insists that ISIS has nothing to do with Islam; that they are a criminal gang of psychopaths. I am sure they are—but they are being empowered by what they view as a religious mandate. Whoever and whatever these masked men of ISIS are--religious zealots, psychopaths, demagogues, barbarians, death-eaters—they must be defeated, definitively, and starting now.

Some say that European Nazis did not represent the values of post-Enlightenment Europe and that Stalin did not represent the values of Marxism. Whatever the case, the fact that so many good people failed to stop them at the outset, condemned hundreds of millions of innocent people to brutal, untimely deaths.

This can happen again. It is happening again.

People can feel it in their bones. There are so many Hollywood movies set in a post-nuclear Holocaust future; usually, there are a handful of survivors midst bleak and smoking ruins.

President Obama, the so-called head of the free world will not do it.

The atrocities of ISIS, meant to shock, (and shock they do) are only a diversion from and a prelude to what can happen once an equally barbaric Iran obtains nuclear power, apparently, something that President Obama welcomes.

Once again, Jewish Israel is at the center of this storm. The survival of the entire world may depend upon whether Prime Minister Netanyahu can persuade the American people to stop their President who is counting on a fully nuclear Iran to stabilize central Asia and the Arab Middle East.

He has kept most of his negotiations hidden and out of sight. Please read Michael Doran’s piece about Obama’s Secret Iran Strategy.

May God be with Prime Minister Netanyahu and with us all as this world spins ever more wildly out of control.
