Vidal Sassoon's Zionist legacy

Israelis on Thursday joined millions around the world in mourning the passing of celebrity hairstylist Vidal Sassoon, but likely for a different reason than most of his admirers. 

Most people remember Sassoon for his "wash-and-wear" haircutting technique that revolutionized women's hair fashion, as well as for his famous line of haircare products. Fewer know that before he became a household name, Vidal Sassoon was battling Nazi anti-Semitism and defending the newly reborn Jewish state against invading Arab armies.

Sassoon was born to a Jewish family in London, but was sent to a local Jewish orphanage at age 3 when his father left. Sassoon left the orphanage at age 14 and became an apprentice hairdresser. It was around this time that Sassoon said his mother declared he was to become a career hairdresser.
But he had other business to attend to first.

With World War II winding down, Sassoon joined a Jewish veterans' group that combatted anti-Semitic fascist activity in London. A few years later, at the age of 20, Sassoon joined the Hagannah (the precursor to the Israel Defense Forces) and headed off to help defend the newborn Jewish state.

"That was the best year of my life," Sassoon later said of his time in Israel. "When you think of 2,000 years of being put down and suddenly you are a nation rising, it was a wonderful feeling. There were only 600,000 people defending the country against five armies, so everyone had something to do."

Upon his return to London, Sassoon resumed a hairstyling career that would eventually see him reach the pinnacle of the fashion world. But he never forgot what he was ultimately fighting for, nor the threats continuing to face his people.

In 1982, Sassoon returned to Israel to establish the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at Jerusalem's Hebrew University. The Center continues to produce in-depth studies and surveys of global anti-Semitic trends. The Vidal Sassoon Foundation also regularly supports educational and cultural projects in Israel.

Mahmoud Abbas' advisor: "Israel is creating artificial heritage with a Jewish spirit at the expense of its [Jerusalem's] true and authentic [identity] as an Arab, Islamic and Christian city"

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority continue to deny Israel's 3,000 years of history in Jerusalem, claiming it is solely an Arab, Muslim and Christian city. Earlier this month, Abbas referred to Israel's presence and activities in Jerusalem as "Judaization" and stated that Israel is stealing what he called the "cultural, human, and Islamic-Christian religious history."

This is not the first time that Abbas has denied Jewish history in Jerusalem and claimed the city for Islam alone. Palestinian Media Watch has reported that Mahmoud Abbas said that taking Jerusalem from Israel is a religious Islamic obligation of the highest level, a "fard ayn" - a personal Islamic commandment incumbent on every Muslim.

In a different speech, Abbas said in 2010: "The oppressor will not last in Jerusalem; the oppression will not endure. Victory will come, Allah willing. This land is Allah's best land, for which He chooses the finest of His believers, as it is written in the words of the Prophet [Muhammad]." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 11, 2010]

Abbas' Minister of Religion Mahmoud Al-Habbash claimed that Jerusalem has been: "throughout history, the capital of the Palestinian state and the capital of the Palestinian people." [PA TV (Fatah), Aug. 20, 2010]

Neither claim is correct. There has never been a Palestinian state and Jerusalem was never the capital of an Arab or Muslim state.

2. Renounce all bonds we as Christians/Messianics might have, according to the ´palestinians´, with Islam.

Brede eenheidsregering Likud en Kadima brengt Israëlische aanval op Iran dichterbij

remier Netanyahu (L) verwelkomt Kadima leider Shaul Mofaz (R) in zijn regering. Mofaz wordt naast vicepremier ook de plaatsvervanger van de premier als deze in het buitenland vertoeft.

In wat een opmerkelijke ommezwaai kan worden genoemd is de Israëlische premier Benyamin Netanyahu -die volgens peilingen veruit de populairste politicus van het land is en één van de stabielste regeringen van de Joodse staat ooit wist te creëren- erin geslaagd om oppositiepartij Kadima over te halen tot zijn kabinet toe te treden. 

 Hiermee worden de op 4 september geplande verkiezingen geschrapt. Netanyahu heeft nu de steun van een record aantal van 94 van de 120 parlementszetels. Waarnemers denken dat de premier zich op deze manier wil verzekeren van een zo breed mogelijk politiek front als Jeruzalem de tijd gekomen acht om Iran aan te vallen.

Nog maar twee maanden geleden bezwoer Shaul Mofaz, die onlangs de mislukte Tzipi Livni opvolgde als leider van Kadima, dat hij nooit tot de regering Netanyahu zou toetreden. Nu zegt hij echter precies het omgekeerde. 'Als het aan mij lag dan was ik drie jaar geleden al tot een eenheidsregering toegetreden.' Als motief noemde Mofaz, die tevens vicepremier wordt, Iran niet bij naam, maar zijn uitleg was veelzeggend: 'Dit is een historisch besluit... Een coalitie van 94 parlementariërs is beter voor de toekomstige uitdagingen van Israël, en die zijn niet eenvoudig. Het land is op een kritiek punt gekomen en moet besluiten wat te doen.

Mofaz heeft Netanyahu moeten beloven dat hij de eenheidsregering in ieder geval tot 22 oktober 2013 laat zitten en niet voortijdig opblaast. In ruil daarvoor zal hij de premier vervangen als deze in het buitenland vertoeft. Ook zal Kadima de leiding krijgen over het opstellen voor een alternatief voor de Tal Wet, die ultra orthodoxe Joden in staat stelt de dienstplicht te ontlopen. Dit wordt door het leeuwendeel van zowel de politiek als de samenleving als een groot onrecht gezien. Onder een nieuwe wet zullen zowel ultra orthodoxen als Arabische inwoners van Israël voortaan gewoon in militaire dienst moeten.

Daarnaast moet er eind dit jaar een plan klaarliggen om het regeringssysteem te herstructureren. Eén van de doelen is om te zorgen dat alle toekomstige regeringen minstens de helft van hun termijn uitdienen, zodat de interne stabiliteit van Israël wordt vergroot.

De buitenspel gezette linkse oppositie had geen goed woord over voor wat Labor lid Nitzan Horrowitz de 'smerigste deal ooit' noemde. Maar ook in Netanyahu's eigen Likud partij is niet iedereen even gelukkig met het toetreden van Kadima. 'Weer een linkse partij in de regering,' verzuchtte de bekende parlementariër Danny Danon. 'Ook zal (Ehud) Barak hierdoor nog een jaar langer minister van Defensie kunnen blijven. Dit betekent een slag voor de nederzettingen, voor de waarden van Likud en het Israëlische publiek, dat Likud heeft gekozen om Israël te leiden.'

Politieke analisten stellen dat Netanyahu zijn politieke tegenstanders met succes doelbewust om de tuin heeft geleid door eerst nieuwe verkiezingen uit te schrijven, maar ondertussen achter de schermen te werken aan de nu tot stand gekomen éénheidsregering. Laborleider Yacivomitch blijft met lege handen achter en zal mogelijk proberen de 'sociale gerechtigheid' beweging in Israël, die vorig jaar zomer vele tienduizenden mensen op de been wist te brengen, nieuw leven in te blazen. De afgelopen dagen mislukten zijn pogingen om dit te herhalen echter volkomen.

Lag Ba'Omer 5772 / 2012 - What Is Lag Ba'Omer ?

Lag Ba'Omer is a minor Jewish holiday that falls between the holidays of Passover and Shavuot. "Lag" is a combination of two Hebrew letters: lamed and gimmel. According to Hebrew numerology, lamed stands for the number thirty and gimmel stands for the number three. These two numbers are significant for Lag Ba'Omer because it is celebrated on the 33rd day of Counting the Omer.

The Significance of Lag Ba'Omer

Lag Ba'Omer is a joyous holiday but no one is sure what it celebrates. The Talmud mentions a plague that is thought to have killed 24,000 of Rabbi Akiva's students during one Omer, and some have suggested that Lag Ba'Omer is celebratory because the plague abated on the 33rd day. Others have suggested that Lag Ba'Omer is connected to Rabbi Akiva's support of Simon Bar Kokhba, a Jewish rebel leader against Rome. The Romans responded to Bar Kokhba's revolt with incredible brutality, but perhaps Lag Ba'Omer was a day when either the Jews won a victory or there was a brief respite from the violence. (Ultimately, Bar Kokbha's rebellion failed.) The military connection is supported by the tradition of taking children to open fields to play with toy bows and arrows on Lag Ba'Omer.

Observing Lag Ba'Omer

Lag Ba'Omer is a time during the Counting of the Omer when people can celebrate. While the Omer is a time of mourning, on Lag Ba'Omer marriages can be performed, children are taken to parks to play, and people often gather for large bonfires. The fires represent the light of the Torah.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar (an important Kabbalistic text), also died on the 33rd day of the Omer. In Israel many people commemorate his death by visiting his grave in the northern town of Meron. The anniversary of his death is a day for celebration because it is believed he revealed the secrets of the Torah to his students before he died.

Supreme Court Returns Old City Properties to Jews

A store and residence in the heart of the Old City have been ordered returned to their Jewish owners after 64 years in squatters' hands.

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered two Arab squatters in Jerusalem’s Old City to vacate the homes they are occupying.

Lawyer Mohammed Dahleh said the court had rejected his clients’ appeal on the basis that the properties had been legally acquired by Jewish prior to the establishment of Israel in 1948. “It went through the Magistrates Court, the District Court and now the Supreme Court,” Dahleh said.The Supreme Court also ordered the plaintiff's – Ghazi Zalum’s house and Ismail Wazwaz – to pay all the legal costs.

Both properties – one a residence, the other a shop – are in the Al-Qarameh neighborhood between the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Temple Mount. Zalum complained to the AFP that there had been a systematic takeover by settlers of properties in the area. “With my evacuation, Israel has evacuated half of the Al-Qarameh neighborhood and Aqbat al-Khaldiyya as part of an organized policy of clearing the Old City,” he charged.

“It is more of a political issue than an Arab or Jewish property issue. This move comes with the announcement of the elections and is a message to Israelis saying: we are liberating Jerusalem from the Arabs,” he said, referring to a decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to call early elections this September.

The identities of the Jewish owners who won the court battle were not immediately available.

Jews were forced to abandon their properties and flee when Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem when Jordan invaded and occupied the territory during Israel's War of Independence. Israel liberated the Old City along with the territories occupied by Jordan, originally slated for the Jewish state under the British Mandate, in the 1967 Six Day War.

Jewish organizations dedicated to re-establishing the Jewish presence in the the Old City and eastern Jerusalem frequently scour archives for documents proving Jewish ownership of properties in the area. With the exception of a very brief period following the Crusader sacking of Jerusalem in 1099, there has been an unbroken Jewish presence in Jerusalem for thousands of years.

'Many of the villages in southern Lebanon will be destroyed'

Any Hezbollah retaliation to an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would prompt Israel to launch a war in Lebanon so ferocious that it would take a decade to rebuild the villages it destroys, a senior Israeli military officer told the British Telegraph newspaper on Monday.

Despite the inevitable international outcry, Israel would be left with no choice but to lay waste to swathes of southern Lebanon because Hezbollah has entrenched itself so deeply within the civilian population, the senior Northern Command officer told the Telegraph.

The officer urged the Lebanese people not to be drawn into a war for which they, rather than Iran, would bear the brunt of Israel's anger, the paper reported.

"The situation in Lebanon after this war will be horrible," the officer, a senior commander on Israel's northern border with Syria and Lebanon, said. "They will have to think about whether they want it or not. I hope that Iran will not push them into a war that Iran will not pay the price for but that Lebanon will."

But the officer, speaking to the Telegraph on condition of anonymity, suggested that Israel had taken "too cautious an approach in the conflict," leading to the deaths of dozens of Israeli soldiers during the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006. Some 1,200 Lebanese were killed during the 34-day conflict, including hundreds of Hezbollah terrorists. A total of 121 IDF soldiers were killed in the war.

"No such mistake would be made in the next conflict," the officer said, especially as Hezbollah had built military sites in the center of many villages and towns in southern Lebanon. Pointing to a satellite map of the town of Khiam, he identified a series of buildings that the movement had allegedly taken over for military purposes, the Telegraph reported.

"In these villages where Hezbollah has infrastructure I will guess that civilians will not have houses to come back to after the war," he said.

"The Lebanese government has to take this into consideration. Many of the villages in southern Lebanon will be destroyed. Unfortunate, but we will have no other solution. The day after [we attack] the village will be something that it will take 10 years to rebuild," he told the Telegraph.

Islamisten dreigen “internationale media”

 

Veel journalisten zullen het niet graag horen. Ze hebben het zo vaak voor hen opgenomen, zo vaak aan de wereld uitgelegd dat de islam vrede betekent en dat de moslims helemaal weg zijn van wetenschappelijke en geestelijke Verlichting, totdat iedereen het van binnen en buiten heeft geleerd – behalve de moslims zelf. Die hebben niet veel op met al dat [politiek/religieus] media geklets. 

Daarom richten ze graag groeperingen op zoals de Taliban, die graag voor en in scholen aanslagen pleegt, of zelfs zoals Boko Haram (“Westerse opvoeding is een zonde”), die nu ook tegen de journalisten en de media zelf ten strijde trekken in de heilige Jihad. En deze Jihad moet zeker niet worden opgevat als “innerlijke strijd”, maar veelmeer als een knallende bom:

Aanslagen op een universiteit en een krantenuitgeverij, dreigingen tegen lokale en internationale media: De terreur van de sekte Boko Haram dringt dieper de openbare ruimte binnen – en krijgt daarmee een nieuwe dimensie.

Op dinsdag (02-05-2012) eiste de islamistengroepering in een video op YouTube de verantwoordelijkheid op voor de aanslag op de redactie van de Nigeriaanse krant “This Day” op 26-04-2012. Daarbij kwamen negen mensen om het leven. Nog een ander verontrustend detail in de 18 minuten lange video: Ook tegen Nigeriaanse en internationale mediahuizen wordt gedreigd dat zij het doelwit kunnen worden van aanslagen.

Eigenlijk kan men daar alleen maar over zeggen dat islam `VREDE´ betekent en dat dit allemaal niet serieus bedoeld is. De journalisten doen aan volksophitsing. Ze willen niet zien, dat Boko Haram alleen maar een culturele organisatie is, die helemaal weg is van godsdienstvrijheid – zoals het in de koran staat geschreven en zoals het door Mohammed wordt bevolen- omdat zij de religie van de islam `vrij´ wil uitoefenen. Wat racistisch zeg, de manier waarop de journalisten op deze prachtige religie reageren! (cynisch gezegd)

Dood, dood aan Israël vanuit Jordanië

Welkom bij de lachebekjes van de moslim broederschap in Jordanië. Vrijdag werden in zeven Jordaanse steden, inclusief Amman, demonstraties georganiseerd tegen Israël en tegen het vredesverdrag schrijft de Times of Israël.

In vreedzaam samenzang werd er om de dood van Israël geroepen, het einde van de Wadi Araba (vredesverdrag met Israël) en het uitzetten van de Israëlische ambassadeur.

Amerikaanse en Israëlische vlaggen werden tijdens de demostratie verbrand. De zure moslims zijn boos omdat koning Abdullah het waagde Fayez Tarawneh als premier aan te stellen. Tarawneh riep de woede van de stenentijdperkmoslims op met zijn mededeling dat hij het vredesakkoord tussen Jordanië en Israël nog steeds steunt.

Jamil Aby Baker van de MB verklaard dat de premier in een ivoren toren woont en dat hij de Jordaanse realiteit van de straat uit het oog is verloren. De meeste Jordaniërs zien het vredesverdrag als mislukt. Het delen van water, de Jordaanse toegang tot de Westelijke Jordaanoever en Jordaanse zeggenschap over de heilige plekken in Jeruzalem vindt niet plaats volgens de MB.

Curieus, omdat de zeggenschap over de heilige plaatsen in Jeruzalem en de toegang tot de Westelijke Jordaanoever een initiatief zijn van de Palestijnse Autoriteit en de Waqf. Zegt weer eens veel over het Arabisch wijzen naar anderen. Zij kennen het Israëlische gezegde waarschijnlijk niet dat zegt: wanneer je wijst naar een ander wijzen er drie vingers naar jezelf. Zelfkritisch naar jezelf kijken is [de Islamitische] Arabieren niet gegeven. Jammer.

De Sinti en Roma vielen, net als de Joden, tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog ten prooi aan de zuiveringen van de nazi's. In de geschiedenisboeken is weinig aandacht voor de gruwelen die de zigeuners, zoals de Sinti en Roma in de volksmond worden genoemd, in die tijd is aangedaan.
