Left, Right unite: Paris council condemns anti-Israel boycotts
Paris city council has adopted two resolutions condemning boycotts of the state of Israel, in the latest blow to the anti-Israel boycott movement in Europe.
The two non-binding resolutions were particularly remarkable given the bipartisan nature of the initiatives: one was tabled by the left-wing Socialist-led coalition of Mayor Anne Hidalgo, while the other was spearheaded by right-wing City Council members.
According to a translation provided by JTA, one of the bill stipulates that it "opposes publicly all attempts to isolate Israel from the collective of nations."
The right-wing initiative was reportedly triggered after anti-Israel activists from the so-called BDS movement - which advocates international boycotts and sanctions against Israel - attempted to prevent an Israeli cultural event from taking place in Paris last year.
The blow to BDS comes on the same week as the United Kingdom is set to adopt measures banning public institutions in England from endorsing boycotts against Israel.
