As Israel ups aid to Jordan, locals storm Israeli Embassy in Amman

The Israeli Embassy in Amman, Jordan

The lower house of the Jordanian parliament unanimously decided on Wednesday to expel Israel's Ambassador to Jordan, Daniel Nevo, and his embassy staff from Amman, and demanded the recall of Jordan's ambassador to Israel. According to reports from Jordan, the parliamentary decisions were the result of Israeli government measures on the Temple Mount.

Israeli Foreign Ministry officials said, "The matter doesn't seem to be serious." Nevo was summoned for a reprimand by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry in Amman.

Meanwhile, a few dozen protesters gathered near the Israeli Embassy Wednesday night, and according to multiple reports burned an Israeli flag and shouted slogans against what they described were attacks on the Al Aqsa mosque. A few demonstrators also tried to storm the embassy during the protest, which lasted about an hour. Jordanian security forces reportedly managed to turn them away.

Oded Eran, the former ambassador to Jordan, told Israel Radio Thursday morning that Israel had recently increased water transfers to the kingdom due to the swelling number of Syrian refugees seeking shelter there. Eran also said that Israel allows Jordan to use the port of Haifa on the Mediterranean Sea to export its goods to Western countries.

You Won’t Believe This One!

The parliament of Jordan has unanimously voted to expel the Israeli ambassador due to “evil, systemized and pre-planned schemes” carried out by the government of Israel. So what did the Jewish state do to create so much anger? The answer is almost impossible to believe. After Muslims gathered near the Temple Mount threw stones and chairs at Jewish visitors to the holy site on Tuesday, Jewish authorities imposed stricter restrictions on access to the area.

That’s it! For this supposedly egregious offense, the Jordanian government is preparing one of the most severe steps to express disapproval available—short of declaring war. Keep in mind that in order to keep peace, Israel already prohibits its citizens from praying on the Temple Mount. As astonishing as this story is, it highlights the situation Israel faces. Surrounded by enemies, the tiny Jewish state is forced to deal with daily threats beyond what most of us can even imagine.
