Father of Five Murdered in Samaria Tapuach JunctionJERUSALEM, Israel -- Life for a young Israeli family changed forever Tuesday when a Palestinian Arab knifed a father of five in the chest, then shot him, as he waited to catch a ride to work.
Preliminary reports indicate the Arab mortally wounded the young father, Evyatar Borovsky, stabbing him in the back and then grabbed his handgun and shot him before opening fire at border police, who returned fire, moderately wounding him.
YNet reported the attacker, a resident of Tulkarem, was released about six months ago after being convicted of deadly rock-throwing attacks and sentenced to three years in prison. According to the report, the Palestinian Authority took his brother into custody yesterday for "collaborating" with Israel.
Israeli paramedics transported the assailant to a hospital in Petah Tikvah where he'll be treated by the very people he's been taught to hate. When his wound heals, he'll likely stand trial for murder, and if the past is any indication, his culture will recognize him as a hero of the "resistance" in the battle against the Israeli occupiers of "Arab land."
Shomron (Samaria) Regional Council governor Gershon Mesika spoke with reporters at the scene of today's attack.
"This despicable murder is a direct result of the impotence in the face of rock-throwing, the removal of roadblocks, and the continuing treatment of terror attacks as disorderly contact," Mesika said.
"The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] and security establishment must internalize that terror kills," he said. "The government has to get with the program and acknowledge that terrorism is terrorism."
Meanwhile, instead of sitting around the dinner table this evening sharing the day's events at school, his widow and orphaned children will return home from his freshly dug grave to sit Shiva -- the traditional seven-day mourning period.
Extended family, close friends and neighbors will pay condolence calls and support the young family as each adjusts to his or her new reality. And adjust they will because Judaism teaches that life is precious and one must be courageous and compassionate even in the face of unspeakable tragedy.
Living in the small Jewish community of Yitzhar in biblical Samaria, this family is undoubtedly personally familiar with the dangers lurking around them.
Since the re-establishment of the modern nation-state, Israelis have paid with their blood to reclaim their biblical inheritance. Some people say the War of Independence never really ended.
This 31-year-old husband and father didn't die from illness or old age. He was murdered in the prime of his life by someone very likely inundated with hatred by his family, teachers, religious leaders, government and peers.
So life will go on for his family because that's how it has to be -- although never the same.
