Yohai Sherki murdered by Arab car terrorist

Shalom Yohai Sherki, who was murdered in a terrorist attack in Jerusalem last week, was on Monday officially recognized by the State of Israel as a victim of terrorism.

A spokesman for the National Insurance Institute, Chaim Fitoussi, told Arutz Sheva that Sherki’s name would be entered into the list of citizens who were killed in acts of terrorism and has been recognized as a terror victim by the authorities.

Sherki’s family was updated of the development by representatives of the National Insurance Institute, said Fitoussi.

Sherki, 26, was initially injured when a Palestinian Arab driver deliberately rammed his car into a Jerusalem bus stop. He was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Another victim, 20-year-old Shira Klein, was seriously injured in the attack.

The driver, a 37-year-old Palestinian from Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem, was arrested and interrogated by police. He was later named as Khaled Kutina.

Israel's population grows more than 10 times since 1948

Israel's population has risen to 8,345,000 as the country marks the 67th anniversary of its independence, new figures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics have revealed.

The figure is more than 10 times its 806,000 citizens in 1948. In 2015, three-quarters of Israelis are Jewish - 6.25 million.

During the past 12 months the population grew by two per cent, with 176,000 births and 32,000 new immigrants arriving. Three-quarters of Israelis are native-born "sabras".

Newly independent Israel only had one large city, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, numbering more than 100,000 residents in 1948.

The country now has 14 cities, each with a population of more than 100,000. Six of them have more than 200,000, and Jerusalem, the largest, has 830,000.

Jerusalem area rocked by three terror attacks over weekend

What you don't hear in the mainstream news!

Palestinians committed three terror attacks against Israeli security forces in the Jerusalem vicinity over the weekend, just a day after the country celebrated Independence Day.

In the most severe incident, a Palestinian drove his car into a group of police officers on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, moderately wounding a policewoman and lightly wounding two others. The police opened fire on the assailant, but he managed to flee. They launched a manhunt, during which the car used in the attack was recovered, and later the terrorist himself was caught.

The three wounded officers were evacuated to Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem.

Arabs began rioting in the area after the attack, and the unrest spread to other neighborhoods in the capital. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat was on his way to the scene of the attack when Arabs pelted rocks at his car, which was lightly damaged.

In another incident, a Palestinian terrorist was shot at the A-Zaim checkpoint in northern Jerusalem on Friday night after he tried stabbing security forces manning the post. The terrorist, Ali Said Abu Ranem, 16, from Jerusalem, died of his wounds.

In the third incident, which occurred on Saturday in Hebron, a Palestinian terrorist stabbed a soldier in the neck as he was guarding the Cave of the Patriarchs. He was moderately wounded. The terrorist, Mahmoud Assad Salaymah, in his 20s, was shot and killed.

A Border Policeman who was on site recounted the incident: “During routine activity at the Tzalbanit Checkpoint, next to the Cave of Patriarchs, a Palestinian suddenly appeared and began stabbing one of the soldiers on my team. In a split second we understood that this was a terror attack, and I understood that we needed to act quickly. I fired to neutralize the terrorist while he was leaning over my comrade and stabbing him. When the event lasts only a few seconds, there is no time to hesitate. You must think precisely and act immediately. That is how we are trained.”

Commenting on the string of incidents, Jerusalem District Police Commander Moshe Edri said that police were bringing reinforcements and preparing for any development.

Israel reportedly hits Hezbollah, Assad targets in Syria

Israel reportedly hit several targets belonging to Hezbollah and the Syrian army in a series of air attacks Saturday morning in the Kalamun area on the border between Syria and Lebanon.

According to a report in the Saudi-owned al-Arabiya, a first Israeli Air Force strike took place Wednesday, allegedly targeting two sites believed to have been Syrian army missile depots.

On Saturday, according to a report in al-Jazeera, the Syrian targets were divisions 155 and 65 of the Assad army, in charge of “strategic weapons.” Al-Arabiya reported that the targets were Scud missile depots housed in the military bases.

Several explosions were heard in the areas of Kteife, Yabrud and a village in Kalamun, according to al-Jazeera on Saturday.

The area is known as a Syrian military site housing weapons depots and installations. There was no official word from Hezbollah or the Syrian government on the alleged attacks.

70 years after liberation, hell on Earth of Bergen-Belsen remembered

Germany’s president paid tribute to Britain for liberating the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen 70 years ago and restoring “humanity” to the country, at a ceremony Sunday attended by approximately 2,000 people, including about 70 survivors, under gray, overcast skies and pouring rain.

More than 50,000 Jewish deportees from across Europe lost their lives at the camp in western Germany between 1941 and 1945, including the young Jewish diarist Anne Frank, in addition to 20,000 prisoners of war.

President Joachim Gauck said British forces who freed the starving camp prisoners led by example during the subsequent Allied occupation.

He quoted Major Ben Barnett, one of the first British officers to reach the camp that spring, remarking on the unspeakable sights he encountered.

“The things I saw completely defy description. There are no words in the English language which can give a true impression of the ghastly horrors of this camp,” Barnett said.

The speakers recalled that Bergen-Belsen was hell on Earth even compared with the horrific conditions of other camps such as Auschwitz, and expressed their gratitude toward the British troops who liberated them.

Islamic Gaza Terrorists Fire Rocket at Israel

The IDF has confirmed that at least one terrorist rocket was fired from Gaza at southern Israel Thursday. There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The Color Red sirens went off in and around Sderot. Residents reported hearing explosions. The remains of the rocket were located in an open area in the Sha'ar Hanegev region.

The last time a Color Red siren was heard in the Gaza Belt region was in late December – four months ago. In response, IAF jets attacked Hamas training grounds in Khan Younes, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Housing Minister Uri Ariel called on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to repsond forcefully to the rocket attack, “so that the event does not again turn into a series of drizzles that will upset the routine and security of residents of the South.”

MK Miri Regev (Likud) also called for a tough response, saying: “We must not let the terror organizations raise their heads.”

Mike Huckabee Calls Two-State Solution ‘the Nuttiest Thing I’ve Ever Heard’

Likely US presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said on Saturday that the widely accepted two-state solution for Israeli-Palestinian peace is a crazy idea and that the disputed West Bank territories already belong to Israel, Newsmax reported.

It’s “the nuttiest thing I’ve ever heard” the former Arkansas governor said, while addressing several hundred people at the Republican Leadership Summit in New Hampshire.

“One of those parties believes the other one should not exist,” added Huckabee. “Let’s quit pretending there is such a thing in that particular country. In the land of Judea and Samaria, there should not be a question as to whether or not that is going to belong to Israel — because it does belong to Israel.”

Speaking at the two-day event, Huckabee also said that he witnessed an Islamic State terrorist camp in Syria just two miles from where he stood during a recent visit to the Israeli Golan Heights. He added that he heard at least 10 rocket and shell explosions going off in Syria, Newsmax reported.

“We were safe where we were, and the reason we were was because Israel understands what it is to defend its borders and recognizes that it does have a right to defend itself and its people,” he explained, also noting that his first visit to Israel was 42 years ago.

Huckabee said President Obama’s failing policies in the Middle East have resulted in Israel allying itself with other nations in the region amid fears of a nuclear armed Iran. He told the crowd at the Summit, “Now, the Israelis are in a greater alliance with the Saudis, Jordanians, and Egyptians than they are with the United States — because those countries at least have the good sense to know you don’t trust the Iranians.”

“I pray our next president will have the good sense to know we don’t trust the Iranians, but we can trust our friends, the Israelis — and we can trust the leadership of other countries in the Middle East, who recognize that you cannot create peace when you chant ‘Death to America’ in the streets of your cities,” he added.

CNN the BBC and Israel

CNN Reporter, BBC Reporter, and an Israeli commando were captured by terrorists in Iraq. The leader of the terrorists told them that he would grant them each one last request before they were beheaded.

The CNN Reporter said, ‘Well, I’m an American, so I’d like one last hamburger with French fries.” The leader nodded to an underling who left and returned with the burger & fries. The reporter ate it and said “Now, I can die.”

The BBC Reporter said, ‘I’m a reporter to the end. I want to take out my tape recorder and describe the scene here and what’s about to happen. Maybe someday someone will hear it and know that I was on the job till the end.” The terror leader directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder and dictated some comments. The reporter then said, ‘Now I can die knowing I stayed true until the end.”

The leader turned and said, “And now, Mr. Israeli tough guy, what is your final wish?”

“Kick me in the ass,” said the soldier.

“What?’ asked the leader, “Will you mock us in your last hour?”

“No, I’m not kidding. I want you to kick me in the ass,” insisted the Israeli. So the leader shoved him into the open and kicked him in the ass.

The soldier went sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9 mm pistol from under his flak jacket, and shot the leader dead. In the resulting confusion, he jumped to his knapsack, pulled out his carbine and sprayed the terrorists with gunfire. In a flash, all terrorists were either dead or fleeing for their lives.

As the soldier was untying the reporters, they asked him, “Why didn’t you just shoot them in the beginning? Why did you ask them to kick you in the ass first?”

“What?” replied the Israeli, “and have you two report that I was the aggressor?”

Psalm 83

A song. A psalm of Asaph.

1 O God (of Israel), do not remain silent;
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
2 See how your enemies growl,
how your foes rear their heads.
3 With cunning they conspire against your people (the Jewish people);
they plot against those you cherish.
4 ‘Come,’ they say, ‘let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.’

5 With one mind they (Islamic Arabs) plot together;
they form an alliance against you –
6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab and the Hagrites,
7 Byblos, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the people of Tyre.
8 Even Assyria has joined them
to reinforce Lot’s descendants.
(the Arabs surrounding Israel)

9 Do to them as you did to Midian,
as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the River Kishon,
10 who perished at Endor
and became like dung on the ground.
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,
all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 who said, ‘Let us take possession
of the pasture-lands of God.’

13 Make them like tumble-weed, my God,
like chaff before the wind.
14 As fire consumes the forest
or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,
15 so pursue them with your tempest
and terrify them with your storm.
16 Cover their faces with shame, Lord,
so that they will seek your name.

17 May they ever be ashamed and dismayed;
may they perish in disgrace.
18 Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord (Adonai)–
that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

1,500-year-old papyrus is the first to refer to the Last Supper

A researcher analysing a 1,500-year-old papyrus tucked away in the University of Manchester's John Rylands Library for over a century has made a startling discovery. The ancient fragment contains the earliest reference to the Last Supper, a crucial event in the Gospels.

John Rylands Research Institute fellow Dr. Roberta Mazza made the discovery while perusing thousands of unpublished historical fragments.

The papyrus is an amulet containing words that are meant to protect its owners, and Dr. Mazza believes it sheds light on the practices of early Christians.

"This is an important and unexpected discovery as it's one of the first recorded documents to use magic in the Christian context and the first charm ever found to refer to the Eucharist – the Last Supper – as the manna of the Old Testament," she told the Daily Mail.

The text of the papyrus reads:

"Fear you all who rule over the earth."
"Know you nations and peoples that Christ is our God."
"For he spoke and they came to being, he commanded and they were created; he put everything under our feet and delivered us from the wish of our enemies."
"Our God prepared a sacred table in the desert for the people and gave manna of the new covenant to eat, the Lord's immortal body and the blood of Christ poured for us in remission of sins."

The fragment contains extracts from Psalms 78:23-24, Matthew 26:28-30, and other Bible verses.

Dr. Mazza said that early Christians adopted the Egyptian practice of wearing or carrying amulets to protect themselves from harm. Instead of writing prayers to Egyptian or Greco-Roman gods on the paper-like pieces, they wrote extracts from the Bible.

"We can say this is an incredibly rare example of Christianity and the Bible becoming meaningful to ordinary people - not just priests and the elite," she said.

"It's doubly fascinating because the amulet maker clearly knew the Bible, but made lots of mistakes: some words are misspelled and others are in the wrong order. This suggests that he was writing by heart rather than copying it.

"It's quite exciting. Thanks to this discovery, we now think that the knowledge of the Bible was more embedded in sixth century AD Egypt than we previously realised."

PA Officially Joins International Criminal Court to Sue Israel for 'War Crimes'

The Palestinian Authority's (PA) request to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) took effect on Wednesday, paving the way for it to sue Israel for "war crimes," even as one Palestinian Arab source noted the move will almost certainly backfire.

In a unilateral move breaching the 1993 Oslo Accords that created the PA, on January 1 the group signed the Rome Statute which is the founding treaty of the ICC. The request was implemented three months later, on April 1.

Back in 2009 the PA similarly tried to join the ICC but was rejected because it doesn't have the status of a state.

However, after the UN granted the PA non-member state status in November 2012, the PA used the move to levy a renewed ICC bid, even though experts have pointed out UN recognition does not constitute statehood under the international legal definition of a state.

The PA is to sue Israel for "illegal settlements" in Judea and Samaria, despite the fact that the Jewish presence in the region is legal under international law as was conclusively proven in the 2012 Levy Report.

Likewise it is to sue Israel for "war crimes" in last summer's counter-terror Operation Protective Edge in Gaza. That move will likely backfire, as not only the PA's "unity partner" Hamas but also PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction took part in war crimes by firing rockets at Israeli civilian centers during the war.

Dutch Royals to Restitute a Nazi-Looted 17th Century Painting

The Dutch Royal family has announced plans to return a painting which hung at the royal private residence in The Hague to its rightful Jewish owners, the BBC reports.

The 17th century artwork by Joris van der Haagen is thought to have been looted by the Nazis during WWII. Queen Juliana, the King's grandmother, acquired the painting in 1960 from a well-known Dutch art dealer whose identity hasn't been made public.

The Royal family is following the example of public museums in the Netherlands, which have long volunteered to have their collections investigated.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima enlisted private researchers in 2013 to scan their collection for looted artworks, who then found The Hague Woods with a view of the Huis ten Bosch Palace by van der Haagen.

The Wall Street Journal reports that investigators examined tens of thousands of artworks in the House of Orange's collection.

The heirs of the unnamed original owner have been contacted to arrange the painting's restitution.

Back in 1997, a committee led by art historian Rudi Ekkart picked up investigations left by the so-called Monuments Men. The Monuments Men—some 400 Allied researchers who attempted preliminary investigations into artworks displaced in Europe during World War II— were unable to find many of the rightful owners.

In 2013, the committee completed an initiative that helped 162 Dutch museums digitize their records and search their collections for looted art, posting their findings online.

Anti-Semitism in Netherlands Up 71% in 2014, Says Watchdog

March Against Anti-Semitism, The Hague, Netherlands, 2005

There was an increase of 71% in anti-Semitic incidents in the Netherlands in 2014 compared to 2013, the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI), a Dutch monitor, said on Wednesday.

According to the organization in its annual report, 100 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded in the Netherlands in 2013, compared to 171 in 2014.

The report found that people who are recognizable as being Jewish, such as those wearing a yarmulke (kippah), were especially targeted by anti-Semitism, which included verbal abuse and harassment on the streets. The number of incidents of physical violence doubled, from 3 in 2013 to 6 in 2014.

As CIDI pointed out, the violence in the Netherlands particularly flared during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza last summer.

The serious increase in the number of incidents in 2014 led to an enhanced sense of insecurity among the Jewish community in the Netherlands, CIDI found, especially in the wake of the attack in the Jewish Museum in Brussels in May 2014 and the threat to the country by jihadists returning from the Middle East.

One worrisome phenomenon documented by CIDI was the failure of police to interfere in anti-Semitic incidents. One example brought by the organization was that of a woman who wanted to report a threat of violence during a party. The police responded by asking whether she had a permit to hold the party.

CIDI also said it was “very worrying that in schools, where citizenship, democracy and respect should be taught, many incidents were reported.”

The organization noted that there were 15 incidents of anti-Semitic nature in and around Dutch schools in 2014, including one where a Jewish boy was stabbed with a protractor and injured in the stomach.
