Giant Oil Deposit Found in Southern Golan, Israel

A giant oil deposit has been found in the southern Golan Heights and estimates are that the amount of oil found will suffice to make Israel self sufficient for many years to come.

Globes quoted Afek Oil and Gas Chief Geologist Dr. Yuval Bartov as saying, "We are talking about a stratum which is 350 meters thick, and what is important is the thickness and the porosity."

"On average in the world, strata are 20-30 meters thick, so this is ten times as large as that, so we are talking about significant quantities. The important thing is to know the oil is in the rock and that's what we now know."

Large amounts of oil have thus far been found in three drillings that have taken place in the southern Golan Heights. The potential for production is in the billions of barrels. Israel consumes about 100 million barrels of oil per year.

"Although the existence of the oil in the ground is a fact," wrote Globes, "the critical phase now is to check how easily it can be extracted and whether it involves high production costs. In a period of very low oil prices, extraction will have to be relatively cheap to make exploitation of the field profitable."

Bartov said, "There is enormous excitement. It's a fantastic feeling. We came here thinking maybe yes or maybe no and now things are really happening."

Israeli entrepreneurs have succeeded in finding huge natural offshore gas reserves in recent years, but their exploitation has been held up by leftist pressure to abrogate contracts the government made with the entrepreneurs and increase the government's share in the gas fields.

Exploitation of the Golan oil discovery is opposed by environmental groups. "This is likely to make any potential extraction from the ground and production a more protracted process lasting many years," according to Globes.

Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, has been identified by law-enforcement officials as the gunman who shot and killed at least 10 people and injured 20 at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, according to the New York Times.

“He appears to be an angry young man who was very filled with hate,” one law-enforcement official said. Officials said Mercer lived in the area but was not a student at the college.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the gunman was killed during a confrontation with officers shortly after they arrived at Umpqua Community College. The first 9-1-1 calls came in at 10:38 a.m. PST.

An online dating profile at SpiritualPassions, linked to Harper-Mercer’s email address, described him as living with his parents and searching for the “yin to my yang.” It identifies his political views as “conservative, republican” and his religious views as “not religious, not religious, but spiritual.” His desired match would have “pagan, wiccan, not religious, but spiritual” views, according to the profile.

On the dating site he affiliated with several interest groups, including “Magick and Occult.”
Kortney Moore, 18, from Rogue River, Oregon, heard a shot come through a window while in her writing class, the News Review Today reported.

Moore, who witnessed her teacher’s execution, said the shooter asked people to stand up and state their religion before firing his weapon.

Stacy Boylen, whose daughter was wounded in the attack, told CNN Mercer specifically targeted Christians.

“[He started] asking people one by one what their religion was. ‘Are you a Christian?’ he would ask them, and if you’re a Christian stand up. And they would stand up and he said, ‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you are going to see God in just about one second.’ And then he shot and killed them,” Boylen, the New York Post reported.

Two people, a husband and wife in their 30’s, were killed after being shot at from a passing vehicle near the settlement of Itamar.

The two received treatment on the spot from IDF medical personnel who were summoned to the scene, but after long efforts to resuscitate them their deaths were determined. Their four children who were in the vehicle with them sustained only minor injuries.

A preliminary investigation found that the family was driving their car in the area between Elon Moreh and Itamar near the village of Beit Furik. The IDF launched searches in the area and the route was closed for traffic, in an attempt to locate the shooters.

At this point a chase is being conducted after the shooters, who escaped in a vehicle into one of the nearby villages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently in New York, was updated regarding the details of the incident.

“The reports we are receiving here at the Magen David Adom (MDA) situation room point to the fact that a very massive shooting incident has taken place,” stated MDA Director General Eli Bin. “There was not much left to do other than determine their death on the spot. Large IDF and MDA forces are at the scene.”

“I will not be surprised if all the recent terror attacks were conducted using the weapons of the Palestinian Police itself,” claimed Head of the Shomron Regional Council Yossi Dagan. “This is one of the most severe and horrible incidents I can recall”
