The Cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday approved a new list of municipal priorities that demonstrated it still very much backs the Jewish settlement of Judea and Samaria, despite renewed US-driven negotiations with the Palestinians.

Those cities and towns on the list will receive special grants for development and additional tax breaks over the upcoming fiscal year. Newly included on the list are several small and even isolated Jewish settlements in areas claimed by the Palestinians.

To make room for the smaller settlements, a number of development towns in southern Israel and several of the larger and already prosperous settlements were removed from the list. The changes sparked controversy from both right- and left-wing parties in the ruling coalition.

Overall, of the 600 municipalities on the list, about 90 are beyond the "Green Line," or, in other words, situated on lands the world insists are "occupied."

Norman Finkelstein gooit roet in het eten van de BDS-beweging

e voormalige Amerikaanse professor Norman Finkelstein beschreef de anti-Israëlische boycot-beweging vorig jaar als een "cult" die de staat Israël wil vernietigen en die geen rationele oplossingen voor het Midden-Oosten conflict zoekt. Door de onmogelijke eisen te stellen en alle producten van Israël te willen boycotten, werkt deze zogenaamde BDS-beweging een oplossing eerder tegen.

Nu gooit Norman Finkelstein de knuppel opnieuw in het hoenderhok door tijdens een vergadering van extreem-links (Left-Forum) in New York door de hypocrisie van deze beweging aan de kaak te stellen. "Als je het internationale recht wilt handhaven en je op het internationale recht wilt baseren, dan moet het internationale recht ook voor Israël gelden" . "Israël is een legitieme staat , die volgens internationaal recht als Joodse staat is ontstaan."

Norman Finkelstein vroeg zich af hoe de BDS beweging op "recht gebaseerde"steun voor de Palestijnse zaak kan krijgen als ze tegelijkertijd de rechten van Israël ontkent. Dat is volgens hem onvolwassen hypocriet gedrag, dat hij niet wil steunen.

Norman Finkelstein heeft een carrière als anti-Israël activist achter de rug deed in het ver;leden schokkende uitspraken zoals dat Israël de Palestijnen in getto's zou opsluiten. Ook gaf hij in het verleden steun aan Hezbollah, door te roepen dat de militaire successen van Hezbollah "overwinningen van bevrijding en overwinningen voor de vrijheid" zijn.

De toehoorders in het publiek begonnen tijdens de speech van Finkelstein te roepen en schreeuwen. Hooggeplaatste anti-Israël-activisten als Lamis Deek en Sherry Wolf rolden met hun ogen en bogen hun hoofd naar beneden, daarmee hun ongenoegen en afkeuring tonende.

Lamis Deek van Al Awda riep tegen Norman Finkelstein dat ze nooit "de entiteit genaamd Israël" zou erkennen. Norman Finkelstein stelde het begrip entiteit aan de kaan en verklaarde dat Israel een gewone staat met rechten , maar ook met plichten is.

Het is niet geheel duidelijk waarom Norman Finkelstein zich de laatste twee jaar tegen een boycot van Israel uitspreekt en waarom hij zo nadrukkelijk tegen de extreem-linkse opvattingen over het ontkennen van het bestaansrecht in gaat. Tenslotte is hij een aanhanger van de Libanese terreurorganisatie Hezbollah. Misschien is het feit dat hem om veiligheidsredenen toegang tot Israël wordt ontzegd, een reden om een beetje te dimmen.

Het is opvallend hoe fel de BDS-activisten tegen de Tweestatenoplossing gekand zijn en hoezeer ze Israël in zijn geheel ontkennen. De boycotactiviteiten zijn dan ook tegen alle producten uit Israël gericht. Daarmee lijkt de BDS-beweging een haast symbolische strijd te voeren, waarin ze alleen zeer extreme dictatoriale regimes aan hun kant hebben.

Netanyahu: Rouhani reveals true face sooner than expected

The response from Jerusalem did not take long, after the speech by Iranian President elect, Hassan Rohani, who said that Israel is “an old wound that must be removed”. Prime Minister Netanyahu responded to the words yesterday (Friday) saying that Roahni’s true face was revealed “sooner than expected”.

“Even if they have now rushed to deny his words, that is what the man thinks and that is the Iranian regime’s plan of action” Netanyahu: “Rohani’s words should wake the half world up from illusions it has held since the elections in Iran”.

According to Netanyahu, “The name of the president has changed, but the regime’s goal has not, it is to have a nuclear weapon in order to threaten Israel, the Middle East and peace throughout the world. A country that threatens to destroy Israel mustn’t have a weapon of mass destruction”.

Netanyahu’s words came in response to a verbal attack by Rohani, said while noting the events of “El-Quds day” in the Islamic republic, there he said that “the Zionist regime has been an ‘old wound’ on the body of the Islamic world for years, and we must remove it”.

Millions throughout Iran went out to protest against Israel. The angry masses burned Israeli and American flags and carried signs calling to boycott the “Zionist entity”.

Iran’s new president Rouhani calls Israel ‘old wound, that should be removed’

Echoing the anti-Israel rhetoric of other current and former Iranian leaders, Iran’s new president Hasan Rouhani called Israel an “old wound,” in comments published just two days ahead of his inauguration.

Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency said Rouhani spoke after taking part in an annual pro-Palestine rally — International Quds Day — in Tehran on Friday.

ISNA’s original report quoted Rouhani as saying: “The Zionist regime has been a wound on the body of the Islamic world for years and the wound should be removed.” Later, though, the agency corrected its report, and said that while Rouhani said Israel occupied Arab land and that tyranny must be resisted, he did not urge Israel’s removal.

The president-elect also expressed doubts about the possibility of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal even as the two sides resumed negotiations in Washington this week, ending a three-year freeze in Mideast talks.

“Israelis show a compromising face to the world but continue their expansionism in practice,” Rouhani said, according to Fars, another semi-official news agency.

Nasrallah, in vicious public address, calls for the destruction of Israel

In first public appearance in almost a year, Hezbollah leader says no Arab leader has the right to relinquish any part of Palestine, ‘from the river to the sea'.

The leader of Hezbollah, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, rallied hundreds of cheering supporters Friday with pledges of support for Palestinians and vicious anti-Israel rhetoric. Israel was “a cancerous growth” that had to be wiped out, he said. “The only solution is to destroy it without giving it the opportunity to surrender.”

Speaking on Quds Day, Nasrallah said “the elimination of Israel is not only a Palestinian interest. It is the interest of the entire Muslim world and the entire Arab world.”

“We say to America, Israel, Great Britain and their regional tools, we say to every enemy and friend … we in Hezbollah will not abandon Palestine and the people of Palestine,” he said.“Call us terrorists, criminals, try to kill us, we Shi’ites will never abandon Palestine,” he added, firing up the crowd.

Nasrallah’s rare use of sectarian language, highlighting the Shi’ite character of his group, is a departure from previous speeches during which he portrayed Hezbollah as a Muslim anti-Israel resistance group. It appeared aimed at whipping up support among Shiites across the Arab world, and reflects the extent which the group feels on the defensive.

Speaking days after the Arab League-backed resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, he said no Arab leader had the right to legitimize Israel, and that all of Palestine — “from the river to the sea” — belonged to the Palestinians, according to a report on Israel’s Army Radio. “No sheikh, prince, king, president or government has the right to relinquish a single grain of Palestinian sand,” he said. It was in Egypt’s, Syria’s and Lebanon’s interest that Israel cease to exist, he said, to loud applause.

Nasrallah has been living underground since the 2006 month long war between his group and Israel, fearing Israeli assassination. He has since made very few and only brief public appearances.
